Key Capacitor Requirements
Low ESR at High Frequency
Servo drives switch at 20–50 kHz, much higher than standard VFDs. Capacitor ESR must be low at these frequencies to minimize internal heating and maintain efficiency.
Rapid Cycling Capability
Servo applications involve frequent acceleration and deceleration. The capacitor must absorb and release energy rapidly without degradation, cycle after cycle, for years of operation.
Compact Form Factor
Multi-axis servo systems pack multiple drives in a single cabinet. Capacitors with high capacitance density and compact snap-in mounting are preferred to minimize cabinet size.
Braking Energy Absorption
During rapid deceleration, the motor acts as a generator. The DC-link capacitor must absorb the resulting energy surge, often assisted by a braking chopper circuit.
