Key Capacitor Requirements
Extreme Ripple Current
Welding arcs draw very high pulsed currents. The DC-link capacitor must handle RMS ripple currents far exceeding those in typical inverter applications, often 2–3x the nominal rating.
High Ambient Temperature
Welding machines are often fan-cooled but still operate in high-temperature environments. The capacitor's hotspot temperature must be carefully calculated considering both ambient and self-heating from ripple current.
Load Cycle Durability
Welding involves frequent start-stop cycles. The thermal cycling from load to no-load conditions stresses the capacitor's internal connections and seal over thousands of operating hours.
